How long do I have to dispute a credit card charge?

Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, a billing-error dispute must reach the card issuer in writing within 60 days after the first statement showing the charge. The same federal rule applies in every state. Count from the date of the first statement that showed the charge, not the purchase date. Debit cards, bank transfers and payment apps follow different rules, so ask your bank or provider.

Don't let a demand letter delay a card dispute when your window is closing. You can do both: send the letter and file the dispute.
